We have two breeding groups of Buff Orpingtons, each group comprising of two cockerels with four hens.
We feel our birds are very close to exhibition standard ,but still have very good egg laying capabilities which are sometimes compromised when breeding purely for ‘type’.

William Cook had already created the Black Orpington as a utility bird but as the demand for meat birds grew ,but there was a need for a light skinned table bird and work began on the Buff Orpington.
Buff Orpingtons were created around 1890 by first crossing a Gold Spangled Hamburgh with a Buff Cochin. The offspring were then crossed with a Dark Dorking and finally crossed back to a Buff Cochin.
Buff Orpingtons are now bred as much for their looks and temperament as for their egg laying capabilities. A healthy Buff Orpington hen should lay 150 – 200 eggs per year and achieve a weight of between 8-10lbs and a cock bird should achieve a weight of between 10-12lbs.
